The Job
1. Listen in an open and non-judgemental way to student concerns that may be academic, emotional, social, or behavioural.
2. Work directly with students on resolving academic and emotional issues concerning them by setting actionable goals.
3. Mediate and resolve conflicts (not only the conflicts between students but conflicts between students and teachers or teachers and parents) so that personal conflicts do not escalate and interrupt academic activities or disrupt the student’s goals.
4. Identify students with learning problems and support them emotionally. Support and guide students in their academic performance and development.
5. Advice parents and teachers on the academic social and emotional challenges students face at different ages, to expand on the ways parents and teachers can help at home and school.
6. Organise counselling and interventional programs, which may include peer counselling, bullying prevention programs, gender sensitizing.
7. Will have to aid students with access to resources outside of the school to provide further support. The counsellor may have to provide a student or their parents with a referral to a senior psychologist/counsellor, if required.
The Person Should have
1. Master’s Degree in Psychology from a reputed college or institute
2. 2-3 years’ experience of counselling students in a reputed school / Institute
3. Worked with students of all ages, and have an understanding of the different needs of students at every stage of development
4. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to actively listen to a student’s thoughts, feelings, and concerns, and provide helpful advice
5. High levels of patience and compassion, to help students deal with a range of academic, emotional, social, and behavioural issues
