Senior Mechanical Engineer – Simulation and Reliability
Job Description
In this role, you have the opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the innovation of product and process. Develop new products, using the latest technologies and resources, often realising systems based on unverified specifications.
Your challenge
We challenge you to support the Philips’ MR Patient Care business as a Senior Mechanical Engineer Someone who can provide mechanical leadership with focus on simulation and reliability analysis. This person will analyze, optimize, and improve the designs of patient monitoring assemblies, as well as generating and managing component level requirements.
The MR Patient Care Business identifies and meets customer and market needs by designing, developing, and distributing specialized MRI compatible solutions, consumables, and sensors.
You are responsible for
Responsible as a SME (Subject Matter Expert) for of thermal and structural design challenges
Responsible to be part of design review team to identify gaps/capability as needed for functional requirements of design.
Responsible to provide hand calculations / FEA simulations for concept and prototype verification of designs
Understands and communicates design trade-offs through simulation and reliability analysis; ability to convey impacts to the product architecture
Through understanding of product / system level reliability and trade-offs; reliability analyses, reliability predictions, reliability testing, test planning, and reliability related problem solving.
Ability to interpret product reliability requirements and translate into reliability modeling, allocation, and prediction
Strong statistical analysis background and sample test size selection
Ensures that there is proper documentation for all analyses
Keeps abreast of technical developments in own field through study of the literature
Post process, interpret results, and report recommendations for design changes
Gain product knowledge at component level, sub-system level and system level to understand design CTQs
Takes a proactive approach to work with engineers, gain good understanding of product development phases, and introduce simulation steps
Prepare design manual and documentation for simulation tasks; Release Designer’s guide on simulation methods and results
Owns the complete responsibility of driving component and sub-system simulation results
Defines, executes, and takes the lead in concept and feasibility studies with a limited scope to investigate the usability of new technologies.
Takes technological or process related improvements initiatives within the scope of the mechanical development group.
Contributes to the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and the planning process of his/her area
Draws up personal schedule and reports on progress.
Performs work in line with the processes that have been agreed in the department
Demonstrated ability to introduce new simulation tools, methodologies, and techniques
Key contributor in the product development process to ensure the reliability of the product is statistically validated, supporting new product launches and existing products
Provide data driven expert opinion on root cause analysis of failure modes or in support of design decisions

The MR Patient Care Business identifies and meets customer and market needs by designing, developing, and distributing specialized MRI compatible solutions, consumables and sensors. The MR Patient Care team is part of the Hospital Patient Monitoring (HPM) business in Philips.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant discipline (with training) + 10 years’ experience as simulation and / or reliability engineer.
Knowledge of state-of-the-art in programming, design optimization methods, and simulation tools (ANSYS, IcePak).
Strong knowledge / work experience with CAD / CAE tools and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Expertise in both pre-processing and post-processing of ANSYS
Expertise on results interpretations with engineering fundamentals
Expertise on various analyses types through simulation and its results interpretation- Static, Dynamic, Harmonic, Thermal, etc.
Experience with design of experiments (DOE)
Ability to present the results, comparison, analogy for leadership review
Knowledge of HW/SW interfaces
Knowledge of reliability and statistical analysis required
Disciplined team worker, ability to work independently and to act proactively
Analytical, creative, and abstract thinker.
Is capable to introduce efficiency improvements on project level (change management).
Reliability engineering fundamentals – life data analysis (Weibull, etc.); system reliability modeling; reliability growth analysis; accelerated testing (HALT/HASS), MTBF, Design for Reliability (DfR)
Robust design experience (e.g., parameter design, tolerance design) or similar applied design of experiment experience
Experience with complex electrical/mechanical products, preferably in the FDA regulated medical device industry
Demonstrated ability to lead, communicate, interact and influence effectively at technical levels across functions.
Demonstrated success in leading change for product quality and reliability.
Demonstrated competence in product reliability tools, statistical sampling, and methodologies
Highly passionate and positive infectious attitude who strives for high performance and product quality
Candidate should be hands on and have desire to work in an R&D environment. Possess a high-level of self-motivation and ability to work on a team. Ability to effectively manage time, organize and prioritize work, multi-task across many assignments is necessary. Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills expected.
Conducts Reliability Analysis to assess the risks associated with design concepts.
Proficient in standard office computer tools: Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
Excellent English skills, written and spoken.
Digitally skilled with statistical and simulation engineering tools, e.g. Minitab, JMP, ANSYS, IcePAK
