About the Project
RANI is a clustered randomized controlled trial in 130 villages, spread over 2 blocks of Angul, Odisha funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and led by George Washington University (GWU). The project supports the National and State Governments’ anaemia reduction endeavours by attempting to demonstrate how a social norms-based intervention can reduce anaemia among Women of Reproductive Age (WRA). A T4 (Train, Test, Tell, Tweak) intervention strategy is used, which includes training Front Line Workers and SHG members, testing the haemoglobin levels of WRAs, telling key messages through video modules and interpersonal communication and tweaking the approach based on the response received. As part of RANI, IPE Global is leading the implementation activities. Intervention activities started in August 2019 and the project is expected to end in May 2021.
Almost a year into programme implementation, RANI is now looking to focus on Knowledge Advocacy including cultivating media engagement to cover the stories from the field as ‘stories of change and inspiration’; and nurturing a cadre of opinion leaders from the State to write opinion pieces on the RANI model. Media engagement activities and workshops are also planned.
