Job Responsibilty
Responsibilities:
The Financials Pod Head will be responsible for managing the Mumbai Financials Pod comprising Dedicated/Non-Dedicated Associates and Analysts. They will be expected to generate ideas and be responsible for developing/writing strategy reports for the European banks sector. They will also help to cover stocks as a Secondary Author or, over time, potentially lead as a Primary Author.
The key responsibilities associated with this role are the following:
Thought Leadership / Sector Thematic
The Pod Head is expected to be a thought leader on products, client requests and new initiatives. The Pod Head is expected to be on top of the latest sector news and insights.
Actively look for opportunities to generate ideas and be responsible for developing/writing strategy reports for the European banks sector.
Support the team create new client products and take ownership of running them routinely.
Assisting in creation of marketing presentations.
Collaborating with fellow colleagues covering the Financials sector across geographies.
Stakeholder Management
The Pod Head will partner with Research Management and work alongside Analysts, Associates & other Team Leads. Should display strong interpersonal & problem solving skills.
The Pod Head will report to the Head of Fundamentals in Mumbai and be actively involved in all management issues concerning the Financials Pod.
Team Leadership
Delivery Lead: Assume responsibility of deliverables sent from the Financials Pod. The individual will work alongside Pod staff and monitor “Quality”. In many cases, given the nature of work, it is not possible to define quantitative metrics and hence it is important to develop a culture of ‘client delight’ by constantly pushing for excellence in service delivery.
Hiring, Training and Mentorship Responsibilities: The Pod Head will be hands-on in the hiring process and be required to recruit high quality Associates for new and replacement hires. Activities include finalizing job specifications in consultation with onshore analyst and conducting preliminary interviews.
The Pod Head will be actively involved in ‘Training Needs Identification’ and will pursue/monitor training goals for Pod staff. On the job training and offhand coaching is widely encouraged and the Pod Head will be required to proactively work towards Pod staff’s development needs.
Performance Management: The Pod Head will interact on a continuous basis with onshore analysts to seek feedback on staff. The Head will be required to identify low performing staff on an ongoing basis and work with them as well as onshore Analysts to achieve desired performance standards. The Pod Head will be responsible for deciding year end performance rating for staff within the bell curve constraint.
The Pod Head should help create an environment which is conducive to employee growth and development; eventually leading to attrition levels less than industry average. The Pod Head should tightly control the post attrition scenarios by managing expectations of onshore Analysts, proactive hiring and transitioning the role to the new Pod staff.
Stock and Client Coverage
The Pod Head will be required to support coverage as a Secondary Analyst; thus making notable contribution to the team’s overall coverage and may cover stocks as a Primary Author.
Create and maintain financial models as well sector databases covering key operating metrics.
Lead client interactions over various forums such as client calls, conferences and investor days.
Qualifications:
6 years (min) of equity research experience;
Experience in working on coverage assignments involving multiple stakeholders across geographies. Preferred 10+ years of equity research experience
CFA Certification is recommended
Education:
MBA from a premier academic institution and/or CA (preferably from Big Four Accounting Firms)
Skills:
Prior demonstrated experience of managing large diversified teams operating in an offshore/global environment.
Advanced Equity Research skills involving data management and analysis, modeling, accounting, valuation and financial report writing.
Prior experience in covering stocks through active participation in framing the investment case and determining the stock call.
Prior exposure to client facing scenarios (internal clients – Spec. sales, traders; and external clients – portfolio managers, buy-side associates) such as presentation over morning call, interaction with clients over in-person meetings, phone calls, conferences etc.
Excellent knowledge about the Banking sector. Should be well versed with developments in the space and be able to provide views. Strong leadership skills in a sell-side equity research context.
Strong interpersonal skills for dealing with senior overseas colleagues.
The individual should have excellent communication and presentation skills.
Strong writing skills (good at structuring the report and articulating the key findings); Ability to synthesize ideas in clear, logical, and precise written English
Candidate should be a pragmatic “self-starter” who is prepared to learn, multi task across projects and work independently if required.
Ability to work under pressure, with minimal supervision, and in a team environment.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and will possess strong organizational skills.
