JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
Creates and/or revises technical illustrations for product support parts information, supporting all products from Caterpillar design facilities worldwide. Responsible for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of graphics utilized by dealers, customers, and service personnel in the field for parts ordering, service repair, etc. Responsible for staff development, training of subordinates and editing graphics.
This position is a graphics specialist responsible for quality, quantity, accuracy and productivity through efficient graphics creation and creation management, helping ensure all NPI schedules are created on time. Incumbents identify “like or similar” components ensuring maximum productivity of graphics creation processes and coordinate between Parts Authors and Illustrators to ensure that common graphics are utilized in all PID (Parts Information Development) document types. It also ensures maximum utilization of corporate assets (Pro/E, files transfer, etc.)
The incumbent ensures that the Graphics Standards are consistent throughout the entire product line and ensures that agency 3D Illustrators accurately show all serviced parts in their correct relationships. Illustrations will depict exploded, disassembled and cut-in-assembly components to facilitate dealer and user parts ordering.
This position effectively communicates requirements with Design Engineers, ensuring information created during the design phase meets PID requirements for maximum utilization of solid models. Incumbents also interact with department managers and supervisors to maintain a high degree of awareness about any and all unique requirements for his/her respective business unit.
Beyond the completion of their own work, incumbents in the position are responsible for staff development, training of subordinates and editing graphics. This involves developing 3D illustration skills within the ranks of agency illustrators working within the department, guiding them through all aspects of graphic production. The position also helps evaluate new graphics technologies and/or helps define requirements for the development of new tools and processes that support the creation of graphics for PID.
Typical internal customers include the position’s work group and immediate supervisor. External contacts include various customers and business partners throughout worldwide markets.
The position is challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems.
The incumbent generally resolves issues by following departmental guidelines and following Caterpillar graphic standards or applying a solution that worked in the past. He/she is free to determine the best way to efficiently and accurately complete a job assignment in order to achieve desired results. Work is reviewed after completion, except in the most complex and high-impact situations. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, etc. The position has direct impact on parts sales through the development of quality parts information.
The incumbent also participates in brainstorming sessions focused on developing new approaches to meeting quality goals in the measure(s) stated.
Limited travel required (Less than 5% of working time).
BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
This position requires experience in technical illustrating and/or computer graphics, familiarity with engineering documentation and broad product knowledge.
Personal computer skills and familiarity with various graphics software packages is required.
The position typically requires a four-year degree in Graphic Design (or equivalent) and extensive on-the-job training.
In addition, three to five years of job-related experience is preferred. It is important for incumbents to be adept at three-dimensional visualization. Because the position is in frequent contact with people outside the work group to give or obtain information, professional communication skills are required.
