The Role: The editor will be part of an international team of experienced reporters covering Asian, European and the US thermal coal markets. The position will be based in Gurgaon, India. Candidates from other locations would also be considered. The job includes gathering primary market intelligence directly from industry sources, and producing news articles and in-depth analysis stories. Besides doing extensive price reporting, you will be expected to connect the dots on key themes affecting the sector, and to produce timely, high-quality news as well as embark on commodity benchmark price building activities. The role also involves seeking out opportunities for cross-commodity coverage, with teams of competing fuels like LNG or oil, but also with other commodity sectors.

The Team / The Business: You’ll be expected to work closely with a team of reporters with deep sector knowledge, spread across offices in Gurgaon, London and Houston. You will also involve engaging deeply with external market sources to spread awareness of the thermal coal methodology and also drive adoption of the Platts Asia thermal coal price assessments. You will come up with timely ideas for podcasts/webinars/videos to showcase Platts’ strengths in the commodity market coverage. You will be involved in making both internal and external presentations. You will be working closely with the Managing Editor to evolve strategies to strengthen pricing and methodology for Platts thermal coal prices across the Asia-Pacific region as we strive to build strong benchmark in the sector.
Your Skills: A natural team worker with excellent commodity pricing abilities, experience in building benchmarks, strong written and verbal communication skills, you have a proven journalistic track record and a strong news sense. You should also have exceptional energy, tenacity and ambition to excel in a fast-paced environment. Added advantage if you have already managed a team.

Responsibilities:
Regularly engage market participants, helping identify key trends in the market, and showcase Platts’ expertise. Develop strong methodologies or strengthen existing ones based on market requirements and also help build benchmark status for Asia thermal coal prices.
Gather commodity price information, produce accurate price assessments/indexes, write commentary, rationales.
Produce daily insightful news articles covering the global thermal coal industry in a timely manner. Areas of coverage include the macro-economic situation, upstream and downstream industries and any changes to government policies. Collaborations with other teams like energy transition and LNG and other competing fuels would be strongly required.
Produce analysis of developments affecting prices across the thermal coal supply chain – from mining to shipping to end-user developments.
Develop, expand and maintain sources and contacts relevant to the market area of coverage
Public speaking at Platts or third-party industry events, and in front of mainstream media
Daily team work and coordination with colleagues and a wide range of internal stakeholders
Strong time management skills and willingness to work across regional teams at their timezones would be a requirement.
Qualifications:
At least one to three years covering thermal coal sector or any other commodity with experience in pricing/benchmark building
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree or similar level university degree
Excellent English writing skills
Strong analytical skills
Good organizational planning skills; able to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
Must be comfortable with Microsoft excel and large data sets
Adept at managing multiple tasks and adhering to regular deadlines. Able to prioritize quickly and to readjust priorities throughout the day.
Self-driven, energetic and proactive
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work in a team-oriented, global, multi-cultural environment
Working knowledge of Japanese, Mandarin or Korean is an added advantage.
